Some thoughts on position

In the past there were many places men were spanked: prisons, the military, slavery (from ancient times to the 20th century), clubs such as college fraternities, in athletic training, sometimes even the workplace, especially for domestic servants.  And of course, homes where adult sons were/are still spanked (possibly common in rural areas until recently).  Most of these places had traditional implements and positions that they used.
Rhythmic blows to the buttocks are the most satisfying punishment for the punisher, but it has always struck me that the spanking could go on a long long time, because the dom, officer, master, boss, whatever is excited without release--he doesn't achieve orgasm through spanking his victim (though some men reach orgasm getting a spanking) and in many cases he isn't even conscious he's being sexually aroused--he just feels good.

In The Naked Ape, Desmond Morris suggests that the reason the dominant male often makes his victim lower his trousers is not to increase the pain, but so that he may enjoy the reddening of the buttocks as the punishment progresses.  He further suggests that the punishment will last longer as a result, since the alpha male enjoys it more and more as the buttocks glow in response. 

And he suggests that forcing the victim to bend over is done to increase the pleasure of the punisher. 

While it certainly has this effect, punishment with a non-flexible instrument like a paddle is far less painful if the buttocks are soft, so bending tight increases the pain, but also the risk of bruising.

 Presenting the buttocks is highly submissive and thus gratifying to the alpha male:

It seems to me that the bent over position with clothes all in place is likely to result in the briefest spanking, being less arousing than bare and also being easily gotten into and out of.

Over the knee spankings are likely to last longer not just because it's a little more effort to get properly positioned and then to get up, but because both men are enjoying the feeling of closeness from this position.

And then there's naked on the bed or couch, with or without pillows under the hips.

Pictures of historical slave or prison punishments often show the victim lying on the ground with his trousers down.  More comfortable and sensual on the bed, this seems to be/have been a popular position for domestic punishments of the older age group. 

It allows for a very hard downward swing, but intuitively I feel a lot of spankings in this position last longer because a man, and his buttocks, just look good (and feel good, if the hand comes into play) in this position.  His buttocks are soft, less chance of bruising. 

Of course, when the victim can be made to further gratify the man who spanked him, the spanker will have some motivation to wind up the main course--so he can enjoy his dessert!

Some thoughts on Power: it's social, not physical

Some thoughts, provoked by a recent email correspondence:

It's amazing how specific our fetishes can be.  I like it when the guy being spanked is very masculine, with muscles and facial hair and long, hairy legs.  I like to see alpha males, strong, confident guys, take a spanking. 

I like it when a smaller guy spanks a bigger, as often happens for example in fraternities, or happened in the past in prisons, slavery or the military.  I've heard people express incredulity that this could happen; they obviously didn't go to high school in the mid-20th century South, where strapping 18 year old lads were paddled by pencil neck geek math teachers and old ladies (not to mention hot chicks right out of college) on the flimsiest pretexts.  Do they think slaves, servants, soldiers, sailors, convicts, etc in the past were all smaller than those who had power over them?  The power is social, not physical.

I wonder how many married men submit to sexual, or even disciplinary, spankings, even if they don't like getting it as much as their women like to give it.  Straight men will do anything for some vagina. 

You sometimes see scenes in spanking films where someone says "If you're going to act like a child, I'm going to treat you like a child."  This is a huge turnoff for me, I hate it.  I like the masculine toughness of a man taking his punishment like a man.  And I don't think children should be spanked. 

It is amazing that after thousands of years of corporal punishment of adults, our society has decided that it's appropriate for kids, not adults.  What's more predictible is that many people raised in such a society can't imagine anything else.
